Villa Rosa Kempinski, an imposing rose-hued 10-floor hotel situated on the edge of the business district, is an ideal base from which to explore Nairobi, but its numerous restaurants and excellent spa and pool more than warrant staying in and enjoying the first-class service.

Location

Next to one of Nairobi’s busiest highways, this isn’t the most idyllic location, but the water fountains in the grounds and the classical music played inside the hotel help to drown out the noise of the traffic. It’s a half-hour drive to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport or Wilson Airport. The National Museum and National Theatre are just around the corner; other attractions will require a taxi ride.

Style and Character

Though part of the international Kempinski chain, Villa Rosa has its own individual charm. The colossal hotel looks more familiar to Europe than Kenya, with columns, water features and lanterns decorating its grand entrance. A manicured garden with park benches and stone statues bordering the back of the hotel is a sweet place to have an afternoon drink. The interior is classically decorated, combining creams and purples, marbles and mahogany.

Service and Facilities

The spa is a highlight, with a sauna, whirlpool tub and nine treatment rooms, and the pool area is nice for relaxing on a lounger, albeit looking out onto the main road. Tours of Nairobi are organised by the hotel, and you can take cooking and exercise classes on-site – enquire for details. The hotel runs events through the week, changing each month, such as an all-you-can-eat sushi dinner and a live jazz night.

Rooms

With 200 rooms, Villa Rosa is mammoth, but the rooms are a decent size for a city hotel. The king-size beds are extremely comfortable, and they have five alternative pillow varieties if the ones provided aren’t to your liking. The décor is elegant but simple, furnished in neutral tones of blues, browns and creams. The bathroom is compact but has a spacious tub. Guests in rooms facing the road will endure some noise.

Food and Drink

The restaurant options are impressive. Choose from Lucco, an authentic Italian restaurant and deli; 88, a Pan Asian dining room; and Tambourin, a rooftop Moroccan restaurant and shisha lounge; a lounge serving patisserie; a buffet restaurant; and a poolside café. In 88, I tucked into some delectable sushi, while at Tambourin I indulged in some silky hummus and dolma, accompanied by a mojito. Yes, a belly dancer did emerge during the evening, but I forgave the cliché for the sake of the excellent food.
