Location

The hotel is in Gigiri, Nairobi’s diplomatic district, which means many guests are business types, but for holidaymakers it offers an easy route out of the north of Nairobi – avoiding the traffic – to explore Kenya. Both airports are on the opposite side of the city and journey times range from 40 to 90 minutes depending on time of day. The hotel is next to Village Market, a shopping mall with restaurants, shops and cinemas and a Maasai craft market on Fridays. A five-minute drive away is Karura, Nairobi’s beautiful urban forest.

Style and Character

The family that owns the hotel has an excellent eye when it comes to interiors. Tribe is kitted out with some hip furniture that looks straight out of a design museum. But dotted throughout are gorgeous statues and paintings handmade by African tribes. In the soaring sunlit atrium is a bar where in the evenings businessmen tap away on laptops next to groups of friends gathered for cocktails while a DJ spins chilled beats. The hotel is a popular hang-out spot, particularly at the weekends for brunch, which is becoming a bit of a Nairobi institution.

Service and Facilities

Staff are excellent and always at hand to attend to your needs – and seem to genuinely enjoy their job.

The tropical-style heated pool, complete with waterfall, is the centre around which the hotel is designed. Take a seat in the water at the floating granite bar, or have a drink on one of the islands around the pool. The gym is well-equipped and a spa offers African and Thai treatments.

Rooms

The majority of the 137 bedrooms have the business traveller in mind, so they are quite compact, but all rooms have extra-long king-sized beds, rain showers and LCD televisions.

Superior options include a New York-style loft, a penthouse and a presidential suite, for those seeking more than a space to sleep. Natural stone-tiled walls and rustic metals contrast against stainless steel and glass, and local fabrics and handmade wooden furniture add a distinctive African feel.

Food and Drink

Jiko is a smart but informal restaurant lit by chandeliers and candles. The menu offers international cuisine, particularly fish, meat and pasta and many colourful salads, but also a pretty varied Japanese menu, including spot-on sushi. The drinks list is extensive. Breakfast is an international buffet. Head up to Nest, the Morroccan-style roof-top bar, for cocktails at sunset.

Value for Money

Doubles from £135. Breakfast included. Free Wi-Fi.
