Location

Just getting to Little Governor’s is fun. After arriving by plane into the Governor’s airstrip from Nairobi (a two-hour flight), you are transported by safari van to the Mara river, where you take a dinghy across, and then walk through the forest towards a clearing where the camp begins. This side of the Maasai Mara is perfect for watching river crossings during the migration, but offers excellent game viewing at any other time.

Style and Character

Little Governor’s was built in the 1970s and is the smaller version of its sister camp Governor’s. The site has a colonial feel (Governor’s is actually located on a spot once reserved for colonial governors), but has modern touches. A relaxed bar, simple roofed dining area, shop and reception dotted with visitor’s safari photos make up the central area. While it is billed as a luxury camp, nothing is ostentatious, and guests looking for a natural setting complete with campfires will be truly content.

Service and Facilities

The camp is not fenced, so animals do wander through, meaning you will need an escort in some areas – luckily there’s staff dotted all around to assist, and they are all very charming. Guides are particularly experienced. Mornings and evenings will be spent on game drives, but while at camp you can go on a bird walk with a very knowledgeable guide, or indulge in a spa treatment. Balloon flights are launched right next to the camp.

Rooms

The 17 tents are dotted around the curve of the marsh, with generous space between them to cut down noise travelling from neighbouring accommodation. The tents are smaller than in some luxury camps, and without some of the finishing touches. But their size belies the spacious wood-panelled bathroom at the back with a powerful shower. Beds are very comfortable, and rooms also contain a wooden dressing table and bedside table. The small outside decking could do with loungers instead of chairs, but the view is beautiful.

Food and Drink

Breakfast (fruit, pastries, hot dishes) is served either in the bush or after a morning game drive. A buffet lunch is fairly decent, serving up dishes like chicken tikka masala, roast pork and penne pasta, finishing up with cake, fruit and cheeses. The three-course dinner menu is more sophisticated, served to your table under candlelight.

Value for Money

Rooms start at $277 (£210) per person including all food (excluding alcohol), game drives and airstrip transfers. Perhaps you can get more luxuries at other camps, but this will be a guaranteed classic safari.

Access for guests with disabilities?

Not suitable. But the larger Governor’s camp has a tent modified for guests with disabilities.

Family-Friendly?

No specific activities on offer but children most welcome.
