Located on the beautiful foothills of Mount Kenya, the elegant Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club is set in 100 acres of landscaped gardens, with fantastic mountain views. There’s also an excellent golf course, an on-site animal orphanage and plenty to do, from horse riding to game viewing on bicycles.
Directly straddling the equator, the hotel sits on the slopes of Mount Kenya in the small town of Nanyuki, and offers magnificent views of Africa’s second-highest mountain. The resort can be reached by plane, with car transfers from Nanyuki Airstrip taking just over 20 minutes. The outstanding Ol Pejeta Conservancy, home to the world’s last northern white rhinos, can be reached in less than an hour by car.
The former property of actor William Holden, the hotel has an old-worldly, traditional charm, with manicured lawns, lodge-style cottages and roaring fireplaces. It’s played host to countless celebrities, politicians and even presidents over the years, with Sir Winston Churchill, President Lyndon Johnson and Bing Crosby just a few examples.
The service is exceptional: the staff go out of their way to make your stay pleasant, with special touches including lighting your wood-burning fireplace and slipping a hot water bottle under your duvet each evening. There are always little treats to look forward to, such as finding little collectable elephants left by your pillow or receiving a certificate of achievement for successfully crossing the equator.
The facilities are also excellent. Most notable is the nine-hole golf course, which holds the title of the only course in Africa to bisect the equator. There’s also a fantastic on-site animal orphanage, in which you can see everything from a 150-year-old tortoise to leopards hiding in trees.
There are 120 rooms, from standard guest rooms to the grand Equatorial Suite, where Sir Winston Churchill used to stay. It’s split in two by the equator, so your room mate could be sleeping in the southern hemisphere while you doze in the northern. All rooms have views of either the gardens, the forest or of Mount Kenya, and have a country club atmosphere, with wood-burning fireplaces, large, indulgent beds and luxurious furnishings. The marble bathrooms have separate WCs and rain showers and plenty of Fairmont products. Many also have separate bathtubs.
Delicious meals are eaten at Tusks Restaurant, where you can sit indoors by the fire or outside on the large terrace with beautiful views of Mount Kenya. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are eaten here: breakfast and lunch are served buffet-style and offer an abundance of Kenyan-inspired and continental dishes, while dinner is a four-course set menu. When I was there, superb chef Picco Alapatt whipped up an enormous Indian feast suitable for vegetarians, so those with dietary requirements need not fear. There’s also Zebar, the cosy lounge in which to sit by the fire with a cocktail before dinner.
Double rooms from KES 22,500 (£165) in low season; and from KSH36,000 (£265) in high, including breakfast. Free Wi-Fi.
There’s one adapted room for guests in wheelchairs.
There are connecting rooms and cots are available upon request, while there’s plenty to do for kids of all ages: pony rides, a playground, learning croquet, visiting the animal orphanage and more. In the restaurants, there are crayons, colouring pads and kids’ menus available, with children under five eating for free.
