The lodge is located in the heart of Meru National Park. It is carved around the rocks of Mughwango Hill and offers stunning panoramic views over the Meru plains. Named after Elsa the lioness from the award-winning book and film Born Free, it is positioned above the former site of George Adamson’s camp where he looked after orphaned lions.
Providing a romantic hideaway in a rustic elegant setting, the cottages have thangi roofs and stylish cosy interiors made of local wood and stone. The lodge prides itself in its eco-friendly approach. Guests are provided with an ‘anti-bottle’, a reusable drinking bottle that can be filled up at water stations around the lodge.
Welcoming lodge managers Charlie and Philip personally greet guests. Staff are professional and attentive, and guides knowledgeable (all are bronze- or silver-level certified by the Kenya Professional Safari Guides Association). There’s an attractive infinity pool overlooking the plains, and a massage hut offering excellent treatments. Activities include day and night game drives, river fishing and visits to the National Park’s rhino sanctuary.
Each cottage is sculpted around the granite hillside, with large open-fronted bedrooms and sitting rooms that have stunning views over the wilderness below. Tasteful rustic interiors have gum timber poles, olive hardwood floors and Indian planters’ chairs. Rooms feature custom-made wooden beds, and most have private terraces. The spacious bathrooms have solar-heated water. There are three Honeymoon Suites, two with open-air baths. Private House, facing Mount Kenya, has an en-suite master bedroom, an en-suite twin room, a dining and sitting room and a private garden with infinity pool.
Buffet lunch is enjoyed in the open-fronted dining area, while in the evenings, three-course meals are served at candle-lit tables under the stars. Pre-dinner drinks with freshly made nibbles, such as cheese puffs and samosas, are enjoyed in the bar and lounge area. Salads and herbs offer fresh greens, and the bread is homemade. The delicious cuisine blends Italian and international recipes. Breakfast can be taken in the bush, and safari dining is available.
