Location

The only lodge in Kalama Conservancy, Saruni Samburu is perched on a giant volcanic rock face offering spectacular views over the semi-arid plains towards Mount Kenya. The conservancy borders Samburu National Reserve, which occupies an area of 200,000 acres.

Style and Character

The lodge has a laidback warm atmosphere with eco-chic design and décor. The open-fronted dining and lounge areas have panoramic views over the plains. Meandering paths connect the communal areas with the two swimming pools and rooms, and it’s not unusual to see dik-dik, genet cats and even leopards roaming the premises. Rainwater is collected and recycled, and water is heated using solar panels.

Service and Facilities

Waiters and guides in traditional dress are Samburu warriors employed from the local area. Service is friendly and informal. There are two infinity pools with panoramic views, and activities include game drives, bush walks, bird watching and visits to local caves with rock art. Helicopter excursions can be organised. The lodge offers an interactive safari experience called Warriors Academy; guests learn about the lifestyle of Samburu warriors, tracking animals and crafting tools. Rooms are equipped with yoga mats and each villa is entitled to a half-hour complimentary neck and back massage.

Rooms

The stunning vistas of the plains below are the lodge’s main draw. Each of the six open-fronted spacious villas has a private deck offering spectacular and unobstructed views. Each room is individually designed, featuring Tanzanian reed mats, rustic leather chairs and crimson rugs from Mombasa. Interiors feature mahogany and cedar wood, and all beds have netting. Walls are embellished with photos of local scenery and Samburu people.

Food and Drink

In the evenings guests congregate and socialise by a bonfire near the lounge area, giving the place a relaxed, friendly feel. Meals are served in the open-fronted dining area. The Italian-inspired cuisine (homemade focaccia bread, grissini and pasta dishes) features local ingredients where possible. Picnic breakfasts by the Ewaso Niro River and fire-lit bush dinners with Samburu dancers can be organised.
